Headache Prevention

Treating headache pain and taking it seriously is good. Preventing it, whenever possible, is better. There are things you can do to be a proactive patient. Many are part of a good overall health plan.

Doctor’s Orders:

  • Daily exercise is a highly recommended preventative. A daily walk of 30 – 40 minutes is good for general health and in many cases can prevent the onset of headache.
  • Make an honest assessment of your lifestyle. Find a small portion of the day to de-stress.
  • Meditate.
  • Avoid food triggers, these vary – if you don’t know what your triggers are, try keeping a headache diary.
  • Get enough sleep.
  • Relieve eye strain. When sitting at a desk or computer for long periods of time, be sure and shift your gaze periodically. Get up and move around as well. Use an anti-glare screen.
  • Beta-blockers and antidepressants may be useful in preventing migraine (which must be diagnosed).
  • Check your lighting. Improper lighting can lead to eyestrain, which can cause headache.
  • Massage your eyes.
  • Keep your neck straight while you work as much as possible. Try to improve your posture in general.
