Biography of Dr. Rutberg

PHOTO OF DR. RUTBERG    Dr. Rutberg’s interest in neurology was a result of a long illness during childhood. Keeping his mind busy during recovery led him to focus on an intense study of the nervous system. Dr. Rutberg has been in practice for over 36 years. He is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania and did his residency in neurology and clinical neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania (HVP). Dr. Rutberg has always been interested in both the clinical and surgical aspects of practice. When he began his career it was often possible to diagnose, but not treat, many aspects of headache. Unlike most of his colleagues, he never turned away medical neurology patients – those who could not be treated surgically. Additionally, he maintained clinical contact after patients had had their surgeries. He has always enjoyed the long-term aspects of follow up associated more with clinical practice.

“I like people, and like being visited by them,” says Dr. Rutberg. “There’s a great deal of medical and emotional support patients gain from visiting the doctor.”

While his own practice now concentrates on the clinical aspects of headache, Dr. Rutberg still finds time to assist younger surgeons and perform surgery as the primary surgeon.
